Our 2018 Homestead Goals: How'd We Do?

2018 will be over in just a little over two weeks! Can you believe it? It's time to take a look back over the year and see how well Dan and I accomplished the goals we set for the year. I blogged about all of these fairly recently so I won't go into detail. You can follow the links if you missed those blog posts. In a nutshell, here are our goals and how well we did.

1. Finish the barn

Done!

2. Pasture Improvement and Fencing

Progress!

3. Continue working on the house

Check!

How about you? Were you able to accomplish much on your new year goals list?

Nope! We accomplished some, but were too busy putting out fires like the roof leaking caused our living room ceiling to collapse and other have to do nows. But then we didn't have major plans to begin with. We wanted to coast a bit. We did want to finish planting the orchard, but the soi; will br si much better in the spring. Cockeyed Jo

You did well!

Jo, that's exactly why I call them goals instead of resolutions. With a homestead, plans have to be flexible! I also like generalized goals, like "continue working on the house." We probably wouldn't have chosen to do that gable end next, but it made sense to do that at the same time we dealt with the leak in the pantry roof.

Gorges, thanks! Having fewer goals helps. :)

Those were some hefty goals, and I like those instead of resolutions. We are concentrating on three projects this year...the barn, the garden, and the pond. There's a lot of sweat equity in all of those, but hopefully not too much expense. The projects you and Dan have completed, just make your homestead more self reliant, and that is excellent!

No but there is hope for next year that we will cross a big item (several years in the planning) off our list.

Wyomingheart, not as hefty as they used to be! LOL We're finally learning to pear down on the goal list, although now, we're getting to the point where most of it is seasonal routine and maintenance. With your big projects, you don't need a long list of goals either, although I imagine you have at least a mental list of subgoals as part of your plan.

Ed, those big projects always seem to take several years to accomplish. I think our goat barn was on the goal list for at least half-a-dozen years! Always a relief to get the big stuff done.

It's good to keep a photo record of these things. You realize how much you got done!

We didn't pick a goal but a major one was given to us by the BC government. We were notified in March we had to remove all shore structures by September 1. When we got our water lease for the cabin there were several things on shore from the previous owner. We were allowed to keep them for the first sixteen years but along with everyone else on the lake we were given the deadline. I was a huge worry for us but by the end of July the job was done. We submitted our paperwork and haven't heard boo since. Next year I have a few things I would like to do, but nothing big. - Margy

Debbie, thank you!

Phil, the photo record is one of the main reasons I blog! It has been helpful so many times to remember when we did a project or what the details were. On days we feel overwhelmed, it's encouraging to see how much has actually been accomplished.

Margy, that's huge! Government or insurance company imposed projects are always annoying, but I know it's a relief to have it done.

I'm telling you, your accomplishments are amazing. The barn alone is amazing. It turned out simply beautiful, and your pasture looks lush and green and healthy. The house is looking pretty too. Most of my lists and goals are for me to do, and I think I got a lot done. Got several lists with things crossed off.

Good work, you two! I love the barn. Do you have power and heat in it Leigh? The place looks like a million bucks!

Leigh said...

Sam, thanks! I'd have to say, though, for someone without goals you are an amazingly productive person!

Henny, once upon a time we didn't think we'd ever even get the barn started, let alone finished! It's a relief to have it done. Still a few more years to go on the house though.

Glen, thanks! No heat in the barn, but our winters don't get all that cold. If I need a heat lamp for newborn kids I just run a cord out to the barn for it. I have two small solar shed lights for light, and that is just enough.

You guys did so well despite the ups and downs...and Dan's accident. My gosh that barn looks great! My goals for the last year were mainly financial and I'm very much on track for accomplishing them! :)

Rain, thanks! And I applaud you for being so dedicated to your own goal. It's a huge thing to get finances under control. I so hope you and Alex are on track for getting your own piece of land next year.

Not nearly as far as I wanted or needed to on some things - but I think I have some options/clarity for 2019.

I also realized, in reflecting myself, that I got to go a great many more places than I had anticipated, and at least on those was a goal 30 years in the making. So not a complete loss.
