Inside the Greenhouse: What Do We Need & Where Will It Go?

November already!

The exterior of the greenhouse is pretty much done and painting has commenced. Next it's time to start looking at the interior. And that means deciding what we need and how to set it up. So far, I have a wish list:

And a rough sketch:

These have been hanging on the kitchen bulletin board since we first started planning, so they are a little out of date. For example, we've already decided the door to the house will go on the right side instead of in the middle. And Dan only has two 55-gallon drums, so I don't think I'll get my three rain barrels. At least not in the beginning.

Also, I've been collecting ideas on Pinterest

So now it's time to decide what we need and how to set it up. At least weather will no longer be a work deterrent.

I'm not exactly sure where Dan plans to start, although I suspect it will be with setting up the rain barrels. Or maybe it will be the house door. It all depends on what strikes his fancy first. After getting the outside mostly done, he's definitely got his second round of motivation. So hopefully, I'll have lots of progress to show you this month.

This looks wonderful. What a great idea to have a green house.

Now the fun part! I really need to build myself a good potting bench and I want to include a low side so I can place large containers there to fill and plant. I am so tired of getting down on the ground to plant containers!

How wonderful to see it all come together. Looks like you have had a lot of ideas about the build and it'll be so fun to watch you using the space you've created!

Off the subject, my email to my blog was hacked, and after fixing all of that, I see the copyright is not on my blog. Can you show me how to add that back to protect my posts and content?

Sandi, thanks! I think it will get a lot of use!

Alex, a low bench for large containers is a great idea. The older I get, the less enthusiastic about bending and squatting I get!

Daisy, thank you! Now we have to sort through them all and figure out what's practical. Doing a plan on paper is one thing, doing it in the real space is another!

Kristina, that is so annoying. Not to mention inconvenient. I'll come comment on your blog to see if I can help.

One of the things I most like from kitting out the interior of our greenhouse was the bench tops. I used plastic decking material. Because there are no face screws or nails, it cleans up really well at the end of the season and I'll never have to worry about it rotting or staining in my lifetime.

Ed, I like the idea of decking material like that, although I think Dan is going to use his home-milled boards. I'll have to see about finishing them to protect from water (of which they'll see a lot!)

Poppy Patchwork, hello and welcome! It is indeed fun to explore ideas and plan. :)

What a really good use of Pintrest. I never think of things like that.

My guess - not that I am there - is maybe the rain barrels, as once they are filled they will be awkward to open?

TB, I think Dan is planning to put a faucet at the bottom of each barrel so that I can attach a hose for easier watering. That means the barrels have to be elevated, so a stand has to be built first.

I've only recently started using Pinterest again. I pretty much quit back when they started allowing commercial accounts, which is usually the fastest way to ruin anything because search results are dominated by paid ads as opposed to what one is actually looking for.

A greenhouse is a big dream of mine as well. I hope I can build one some day!

Rain, you'd probably get a lot of use out of a greenhouse, considering your location. It's a good project to add to your wish list!

You must be so happy that the main part of the construction is done and now it's just the parts that are more fun. If you make a few of benches etc. as free standing items, you'll be able to move things around after you've tried things out if necessary. The potting benches and tables are more permanent in my green house as I didn't build it and I do sometimes wish that I could move things around more to my liking. It's looking good though!

A big comfy chair to sit in is always my first addition to anything anymore :)

Nina, getting this far is a big relief. Dan's going to start with the permanent fixtures, like the rain barrels. The rest still has to be figured out.

PP, I have to say that on chilly days the greenhouse is lovely to be in! I should add a comfy chair to my list. :)
