More Progress on the Greenhouse

Continued from Progress on the Greenhouse.

We had a week of beautiful weather, so Dan was able to make quite a bit of progress on the greenhouse. First up was a cover for the solar vent fan.

He was thinking he'd have to make something, but then he remembered this . . .

That vent cover has been sitting in his workshop for the past eight years! It was the one he removed from the back gable end of the house when he installed our solar attic fan. He washed it off, painted it, and added new hardware cloth as a screen over the back. To install, all he had to do was slip it under the trims and screw it down. It fits perfectly.

An opening for a rainwater pipe from the gutter will be added after he gets the rain barrels in place.

Then it was on to finish the gable end at the back.

Unfortunately, it means Katy will lose one of her favorite perches.

But it can't be helped. Since he only bought one piece of the double-walled polycarbonate, Dan did something different in the back. He used a leftover piece from leak proofing the roof

Then he finished up the trimwork on the back.

Still to do: flashing, caulking, sealing, painting.

Leigh, I once read an African proverb that said "If you save something 10 years, you will have need of it"; your gable proves the point.

It looks great!

TB, thanks! Ironically, it's the things I get rid of that I usually need first.

Looking good! My parents eventually installed a fan and a heater tied to a thermostat in their greenhouse in their later years and probably tripled the usefulness time of it.

I guess this is an example that people who save things "because you never know" can point to in triumph!

This extension is looking great. And I expect Dan can find a piece of lumber and set up a new kitty perch somewhere in there, with bird views.

Looks great, fun to use what you already have

Ed, I can understand why. I don't know how much the fan will help, but I'm thinking it's a necessity. Still contemplating heat without electricity.

Boud, thank you! That's a good idea about a new kitty perch. She does love to hang out around the greenhouse.

Nancy, so true. It's such a good feeling to put something to use that formerly had no use. It's a good feeling to not have to buy something! Win win!

Maybe I’ve missed it but what kind of planning and permits did you have to do to begin this project? Do you have to have someone do a final inspection? I’m always overwhelmed by that part of the process and just want to jump in and do!

Anonymous, it varies from state to state, county to county, and town to town. The best thing to do is contact your county administration offices and they can direct you to what's relevant for you.

Your greenhouse is really coming along now. It is a good feeling to use what you have, and especially something you've been hanging on to for a while. Looking forward to a tour of the inside when you have it full of green and growing things!

Rosalea, figuring out the inside is next. I have a list of things I want, but I have to figure out where everything should go! It looks easy on paper, but I'm not as sure when I'm standing inside and looking around. :)

Wow, it's coming along nicely! Glad you had a great week of weather for it. We are very behind in building our new coop. It's frustrating. We are actually hitting some 80 degree days, so I hope we get more progress. There always seems to be something, and it doesn't help that he works full time too.

Kristina, projects always seem to take longer than we want! I hope you make some good progress as well.

We just put the garden to bed last weekend and are expecting some frigid temps, I'm spent. Don't know if you are to that point yet, but I bet with such a greenhouse, you are going to be itching to use it come spring 💕

Oh my gosh, Dan has done an amazing job on the greenhouse. It likes wonderful! It sure payes to save scraps of building supplies...I have quite a collection and always finding just what I need. :)

Lady Locust, I'm definitely ready for our winter break! First frost probably tonight, so today was busy getting the last of the garden in. I'll take my time clearing out the summer beds and tucking them in under a thick layer of leaf mulch.

Henny, yes! Dan has done an amazing job on the greenhouse. He says it's slower going when he has to hunt for stuff, but it always feels good to reuse something and give it new purpose. :)
