Good Chickens, Stupid Song

With apologies to Dorothy, The Wizard, and the Land of Oz

I'm off to feed the chickens
Those wonderful chickens of ours
They need the feed to lay the eggs
If ever some eggs there was

If ever the moulting will come to an end
If ever the pullets will grow into hens,
Because, because, because, because, because,
Because we love eggs for the things they does

I'm off to feed the chickens
Those wonderful chickens of ooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuurs

Don't you just hate it when you get some stupid song stuck in your head? Actually, I can change it now.

Our very 1st Buff Orpington pullet egg

So with apologies to the Campbells and the Scots....

The chickens are laying, Ho-Ro, Ho-Ro
The chickens are laying, Ho-Ro, Ho-Ro ...........

Buff Orpington, Barred Holland, & Ameraucana eggs

Oh thanks..earworms for a snowy day..;)
I have songs too for some of the things I do around here, but every morning without fail, I think of the old Dunkin Donuts commercial..time to make the donuts
as I drag my PJ'd self out complete with robe, coat, scarf, hat headlamp and gloves out into the dark cold world to feed the outside crew.

Nice looking eggs Leigh!

Thanks for the early morning laugh! Our barred rocks and americauna just started laying this past week so I can sing the song now, too! :)

Pretty eggs; love the basket...and the song. We don't get many eggs at this time of year. Can't wait until spring so we can quit buying them.

That song was awesome!! This time next year, I'll be singing it with you.

Aw I love it! We are a homeschooling family of 6 living in OH, getting started with our own backyard flock and gardening. Soon we will move to CO off the grid and farm full time. Coming to your blog gives me inspiration and makes me understand how beautiful a life like you live can be ;)

Thanks for blogging ;)

Blessings,
Samantha (Woodland Woolens)

Oh, Lord! I'm laughing my butt off over here - and I'm going to be singing the Wizard of Oz song the rest of today - thanks.

Love it! Congrats on the eggs. You know what? I'm turning into a believer in banties. Those tiny girls have laid steadily all winter long, while my welsummers and supposed americauna have been on a six week vacation with no end in sight. The banties are sure not using feed to put on body mass! They just may get my vote, even if their eggs are tiny. In any case, I love your song, eggs, and basket! (I sing mares eat oats, does eat oats, and little lambs eat ivy... while I do chores each morning. ) ;-)

It's been a weird winter here, weather-wise. My chooks have barely slowed down their laying this winter. Quite amazing. Love the cute songs.. hate when that happens, though it's always funny as well as irritating.

Well, Blogger ate my own reply comment! That's a first.

Theresa, I think those songs really help when it comes to doing those mundane tedious chores!

Mama Tea, chickens beginning to lay is definitely something to be happy about!

Starlighthill, next summer, when your eggs are plentiful, freeze the extras! I froze 13 dozen for winter use and was really glad I did.

Samantha, thank you! Your comment didn't show up on Blogger either! There's never a lack of learning material when it comes to homesteading and homeschooling. :)
Congratulations on your upcoming move to Colorado, what an opportunity that sounds like.

Beth, thanks! The more the merrier. Maybe we need to work out some harmonies. :)

Benita, sorry! I absolutely could not get that stupid song out of my head! Hence the post. :)

Michelle, I've only heard wonderful things about Bantam breeds. They make good mothers I hear too. I like your song as well. :)

Nina, that's always welcome! My "old" gals aren't laying at present, but all the July hatches have just started. So glad to have fresh eggs again.

Great post. The tune does stick to a person from time to time. I must make a confession, being from Kansas, I have never seen the movie. Never had a desire to see the movie, but I do like your version.

Thanks for my morning chuckle. (I think you have talent!) When I have to get up in the middle of the night to make a pit stop (arrrgh) this little ditty always goes through my head:

"At three in the morning
when you're in bed,
the Wholsum bakers are baking bread."

Wholsum bread may have been just a Midwest outfit but it used to play as a commercial on TV all the time.

Hysterical ! Of course I adore The Wizard so any reference is fine by me. Yeah, blogger eating comments of mine too. Maybe the first of our government censoring the internet? I woudn't be surprised

Kind of reminds me a little of some songs that were made many years ago and that i listened to when i was a kid, now when i hear them i try to hear the words and realize how stupid of a song it always was to me! Hope to see you on my Witness movie location tour that ill be posting on my blog this Thursday. Richard

Thanks, now I have that song in my mind...I like your words better! - Looks like the molt is over! xo

This could be our Winter Theme Song! I was singing the blues not so long ago - but they are finally finished moulting and eggs are slowly but surely being laid. Yippee!

Hilarious! Now I'll be singing that one in my head all day . . . thanks!

So far we've averaged five eggs a day from our eight girls, but it's just now starting to feel like winter here. We'll see how well they keep laying, but so far we can't keep up with them, with four dozen in the fridge!

Oh, I love it! I do it, too, and for some reason it typically involves an Elvis song. Sing on, Leigh!

John, I'm amazed you've never seen it. When I was growing up, it was an annual January TV event. Of course all us kids were parked in front of it. :)

Mama Pea, oh no! Now I'm gonna start thinking about that jingle when I get up in the middle of the night!

Donna, bad on Blogger!

Ginny, and hopefully you were in such a good mood that your warping went very well. :)

Richard, I'll be glad to come by for a visit! It's true how we sometimes never realize how silly those songs actually are.

Sherri, sorry! Better than the Llama song!

Susan, hurray for your chickens! Fresh eggs are always something to be happy about.

Janice, freeze the extras! Since the days are getting longer, you may do okay with your egg count too.

Candace, ;)

Jaime, it's the best way to amuse ourselves, LOL. Dan is really better at it than I am. I should sometime try to share some of his songs.

Aw, cute little pullet eggs. My buffs, wyandotts, and rhodes are just getting their standard size to them. Well, the one buff who lays a double yolk every day started out with ostrich-like eggs. I'm averaging 22 eggs a day out of the 29 girls. Thanks to a light and and three extension cords :) I ran into something I never thought would be a problem. About five people I've asked about buying eggs won't take mine because they are brown eggs. Two people just flat out don't eat eggs. Three people actually liked the idea of free range organically fed chicken eggs. A whole bunch of people (not a very scientific count) seem to prefer the ritual of finding eggs in Wal-Mart. Some people are something else.

You "cracked" me up! Thanks for the smile.

One of my hens never quit laying, and the rest moulted and are starting up again, so I'm getting 5-7 eggs a day (out of 9 hens). Gave away 2 1/2 dozen yesterday, and still have 2 dozen in the fridge for me! Love me some home grown eggs!!

Tom Stewart said...

Still no chickens here yet! Only in my mind and dreams! Hopefully soon!
AS Andrew said, Most people don't know squat about Chickens or eggs!
One of the people I work with will not eat brown eggs....Get this. She said that the color of the egg means the hen was raised on a dirt floor!?
WHAT? If an egg is white...What was it raised on?? Snow, Rice?????

BrokenRoadFarm said...

LOL!!! That was perfect! Now I will be singing this in my head all weekend :-) Love the pullet egg! We have been lucky - our 4 ladies have been averaging 2 eggs a day so far this winter. Loving every one!

aleisethefunny said...

Mmmm... looks good. I so wish I could have chickens in my city.

Leigh said...

Andrew, that is an unfortunate reality! It amazes me that folks shun brown eggs, but if it isn't sold in the stores, then they don't consider it edible! What a shame.

Norma, you're welcome. :)

Sue, freeze some of the extras! You'll be glad you did if your hens every "lay off."

Tom, ROFL, you're hilarious! It's hard to imagine that in this day and age people actually believe that stuff!

BRF, it's wonderful to be in stead eggs!

Aleise, some places allow up to 3. As pets. Have you checked the ordinances?
