Blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream. |
July is blueberry month! And every year, I start blueberry season off with a fresh blueberry pie. What better way to celebrate Independence Day! Very American!
For dinner? Pizza!
Pepperoni and black olive pizza (Dan's favorite) with homemade mozzarella. |
Sometimes we can see fireworks over the tree tops from our front porch. We'll give that a go when it gets dark. That's about the extent of our going anywhere or doing anything for the holiday.
What about you? Planning anything special? Do you have favorite 4th of July foods or activities? No matter how you spend the day, I wish you a blessed one.

The blueberry pie looks scrumptious! I too, do not enjoy the home fireworks barrage... being a vet with some combat experience does rattle me every once in awhile, I do enjoy large commercial run fireworks displays, I am ready for those and know what to expect. Home type sounds too much like house to house fighting and sporadic. I am going over to my brother's for a barbecue and mouth to mouth resuscitation on a couple of beers. Then visit and watch the small community fire department puts on a small display every one in this small town donates for. A nice family time.
Kevin, that sounds like a lovely relaxing time with family. I hope your weather forecast cooperates!
The food looks very good. Happy Fourth. Here weather is sunny, 80s, very nice for my plan to read on the shady deck this afternoon.
Usually I just worry about the area teenagers setting the landscape on fire with their illegal fireworks. I love blueberries but gosh I haven't had a homemade blueberry pie in decades - can't even remember when. Yours looks luscious!
The pizza looks delicious also! I had my breakfast oatmeal 3 hours go but now I'm hungry all over again :)
Liz, sounds like my kind of plan!
Quinn, kids do have a way of getting into mischief. I hope your day passes with no incidents!
Quinn, pizza and pie have a way of doing that. :)
We usually spend the day as a family and although not a requirement, we do often end up cooking some of our food on a grill. I would be content to see or hear the fireworks from the comfort of my home by my immigrant wife, still likes to see them more up close and personal. So we will likely join the masses late this evening for a brief display along the river and then try to drive safely home while everyone rushes to be the first one back.
I never really celebrate. The crowds. Like you, I can usually see the fireworks somewhere. I don;t like the noise either and don't get me started on the possibility of fires, lol. What a grump, huh? At least we have had a lot of rain and today will be no different. #Florida
Ed, I can't say that I blame her! Fireworks displays are quite the experience and there's something about a crowd that feeds our enthusiasm. We used to live within walking distance of a city park, so we were able to travel on foot and avoid the traffic. But I reckon I've seen enough fireworks displays to last my lifetime. :)
Barbara, a lot of us feel that way! Crowds and traffic is the reason I don't want to go, but I can't blame people who do. To each their own. :)
Happy 4th to you and Dan!
Just checked a wild blueberry patch on our road and snacked on a few. Not quite there yet, but, there are lots, and with the rain we've had, should get a good picking!
Coincidentally, I am making pizza tonight as well, but because it is Friday and we have a guest.
Leigh, maybe a local parade.
The pie looks delicious. We now live in a locale where blueberries actually grow (instead of being trucked in), so looking forward to lots of them.
Rosalea, how nice to have a wild blueberry patch. I hope it's an abundant harvest.
TB, a local parade would be fun. Especially if you don't have to travel too far to it.
One year I bought my daughter a miniature container blueberry plant. I don't think she did a very good job of taking care of it, but I thought container blueberries would be nice for a balcony garden.
The pizza and the blueberry pie both look great, and I love the blue willow plate, too! We have those dishes that were handed down from my parents and have added to them over the years. The scenes on them are Asian, but they are very American to me!
Bob, what a treasure to have some heirloom Blue Willow. Mine is my own collection, with many gifts from family members. They are my favorite dishes.
Looks delicious! I wonder if you could grow sugar cane or sugar beets for use in recipes?
Fireworks are pretty abundant these days. In addition to the official show, there were a lot of regular people getting together in local parks and doing their own shows, with some pretty professional-looking fireworks!
Your Fourth of July plans sound a lot like ours. I made a blueberry pie too, but mine does not look as good as yours. We also sit on the porch thinking we might hear or see a few fireworks from way across the creek. Your pizza looks delicious too!!
Anon, I did grow some sugar beets one year and then process them to make syrup. It was pretty labor intensive! Not sure about sugar cane; I may not be far enough south. I do know it takes some heavy duty processing equipment! Maybe it would be better to try my hand at honeybees again.
Henny, good to hear from you! I confess my pies are pretty inconsistent, I mean the crust is. But I do love pie for dessert, and those "first fruit of the season" pies are the best!
Ah, I didn’t know the processing was so labor intensive. It makes me appreciate how easy it to buy. I always like reading about the new things you try :)
Looks scrumptious!
Our family traditions for the Independence Day weekend are watching “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, and putting together all of our Lego camper sets for display all summer on the mantle. We are easily amused. Enjoy your week!
Daisy, simple pleasures are the best!
The blueberry 💙 pie 🥧 looks amazing 👏 Warm greetings from Montreal 😊 ❤️ Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you Linda! And a belated Happy Canada Day to you!
