Permies Homestead Bundle: Day 4 Resource Reviews (Last Day!)

Are you all getting tired of my daily resource reviews for the Permies Homesteading Bundle! So these are the last of the reviews, although I admit that I had a lot of fun writing them. Since today is the last day to buy the bundle, I had to pick and choose which reviews to include in today's blog post. 

I need to say something here about homesteading. Even though it is often described as a path to self-sufficiency or self-reliance, the truth is that these goals are most successful when pursued with local like minds. Successful homesteading is not found in isolationism, although it is possible to do as much as one can on one's own. True success and resiliency are found in community.

Many people say to me, "I can't homestead because . . . . " Well, maybe they can. Maybe everyone can, if they are part of a larger homesteading community. Even the apartment dweller can grow and trade herbs for eggs, or spend a day trading work for vegetables. 

Together Resilient: Building Community in the Age of Climate Disruption by Ma'ikwe Ludwig starts with the premise that our current model of social structure isn't working. Agree or disagree, I think we all acknowledge that the culture we grew up in is rapidly changing because of concerns about climate. Again, agree or disagree, we see changes being implemented that are going to significantly impact our future. Everyone's future. So, the choice becomes, are we going to wait and see how governments and global leaders manage the problem, hope they remember us little guys, and just live with the results? Or are we going to be proactive as both individuals and communities to ensure a sense of security and resilience for ourselves, our families, and our neighbors?

Together Resilient is intelligently written and gives the reader, not only a lot to think about, but positive actions that can be taken.

I decided to review Harvesting Rainwater for Your Homestead in 9 days or Less by Renee Dang after reading Comptonia's blog post about having plumbing problems and problems finding a plumber. It was a reminder of how important water preparedness truly is.

I know not all states in the US allow rainwater collection systems, and the first thing Renee addresses is the legality of rainwater harvesting. That chapter is very thorough, with charts clarifying what each state allows and doesn't allow. The remaining chapters give you everything you need to know: the basics of how it works, clarifying your goals, cost, safety, scale, source, installation, and maintenance. Each chapter provides an action guide, to help the reader take steps. 

There are things in this book that I wish we'd known before we started on our rainwater collection. It's one of 35 resources available in the Permies Homesteading Bundle.

Understanding Roots: discover how to make your garden flourish by Robert Kourik is for the science minded, geeks, and serious gardeners out there. I'm excited about this one because my own journey into understanding plant and soil science has been an exciting one. I never dreamed how interesting and delightfully complex this ecosystem actually is. The book contains an informative combination of soil facts, planting techniques, scientific studies, folk wisdom, growing strategies, and fascinating root drawings by Dr. John Weaver. One thing I learned, is that the root systems of most trees extend far beyond their drip line! I didn't realize that. 

Chapters include information on humus, beneficial root biota, dynamic accumulators, deep roots & nutrients, nitrogen-fixing roots, roots to improve the soil, and favorable fungus. Practical advice is found in the chapters on transplanting roots, mulching tree roots, and roots & grey water. 

Highly recommended for any and all serious gardeners and plant growers out there. If that isn't you, you can gift the claim code to someone else!
