Problems With Embedded Comments

I'm having trouble leaving comments on some blogs with embedded comments. You know, the ones where readers can reply to individual comments. On some blogs, no problem. On others, I hit "publish" and my comment disappears with no acknowledgement from Blogger that I made it. I try again with the same result. What's puzzling is that it isn't consistent on all blogs with embedded comments. Anyway, if I usually comment on your blog and haven't heard from me in awhile, that may be why.

This is a known problem on Blogger that I thought they resolved. But I recently switched my own blog's comments back to pop-up, after hearing from a regular reader who could no longer leave a comment when I used embedded comments. Is anyone else having trouble leaving comments on blogs?

Yes. My strange issue is that when I try to make a reply to a comment you've made on my blog, it disappears! So far, not having the same problem sending a reply to anyone else. What the . . . ??

Mama Pea, that is very odd! But the whole thing is odd.

If you leave a comment on my blog, I have to "approve" it before it's "published" to avoid spam. I get a lot of foreign comments and have to delete them. Sorry if it's an issue.

Haven't noticed any trouble with this. Hmmmm...

I've noticed the same but haven't had any complaints about ny blog. I think it has to do with the blogger's settings, but beyond that I don't know.

Kristina, usually, when comments are set to moderation, the commenter receives a message that the comment will appear after it's been approved. But on some blogs, I don't even get that message. The comment just disappears. I go back to check later, but the comment is never published so I assume the blog owner never got it. :(

Daisy, that's good!

Boud, it's a common problem with embedded comments. Not consistent, but common. I'm in test mode, so I just left a comment on your blog but see no trace. Did you get it?

Boud said...

Yes, and you should have seen a message explaining it was waiting for moderation. I've done that, so you should see it now.

The kind of disappearing I've been experiencing is where I haven't even finished typing and it's vanished!Several times.

Boud, thank you for the feedback; very helpful and reassuring. I see the message on some blogs but not on others.

I've had that vanishing-in-the-middle-of-typing thing happen too, although it's been awhile. It seemed to be that the page was very slow in loading, so when it finally did load, it reset the comment field to blank. Very annoying.

Thanks for the feedback about no message explaining moderation in action. I'll look in my settings again, because it's supposed to show.

And yes, the apple turnovers were (note past tense) good.

I can't recall any in particular. You mentioned that you tried to leave a comment on my blog 3 times - I received all 3 attempts but evidently you didn't see it on your end. Our computers have been pretty slow both at home and at work so ???

Leigh said...

Boud, please let us know if it's something in the settings. That info might be useful for a number of us.

Lady Locust, thank you for letting me know about that. Used to be we'd either get a message saying it might take a few minutes for our comment to appear on the blog, or that moderation had been enabled and it would appear after approval. They've changed so many things on blogger (and not all for the better) that maybe the problem has something to do with that. Thanks to you and Boud, I know not to worry about it any more.

i dont get around to publishing comments for a bit. But I changed mine to be popup after someone complained , and then they never came back anyways lol

hey, are you guys using this "subscribe to post comments Atom" thing? Because I am not, I just hit "post a comment"

Leigh said...

Serenity, I notice that complainers often do that; not bother to come back. Oh well.

I've never done the comment subscribe thing. I think it used to be a feedburner feature, but feedburner went bust, so I don't know who handles these now.

Boud said...

I don't think anyone handles it. So I don't use it. Today I noticed zero activity on my blog all day, very unusual. So I discontinued embedded comments and two comments promptly showed up. I suspect that helped. I never found any way of ensuring that the commenter gets an acknowledgement, though.

Yes I have noticed that on a few blogs. It is a known problem, and I am sure it has been reported to Blogger (I reported it myself.). But it never gets fixed. So all I can do is let the blogger know - by email - and then I move on to other blogs I follow. If I want to respond to a post that has embedded comments set - I send them an email. It reduces the number of comments I make since. It just seems like blogger is not maintaining or fixing stuff. I can’t help but wonder do blog platforms ever go away?

Boud, I'm glad you at least figured something out! Embedded comments are a good idea, but the bugs in blogger's are a problem. Considering how many years this has been a known problem, I doubt it will ever get fixed.

RT, about ten years ago I had someone tell me that facebook was the trend of the future and that blogs would soon be obsolete. (!)

My daughter is a senior software developer for a small company, but being in the same industry has some observations about blogger's parent company. Apparently, they tend to hire a lot of new grads for their junior positions and then turn them loose on the least important stuff. On the one hand, it gives them experience, but on the other, they often don't know what they're doing and it shows. Bloggers change in interface to be more mobile friendly is the latest example. The dashboard has going from being elegant to klunky, and with a lot of problems that they don't seem to know how to fix. Or don't care.

Remember G+? They promoted that thing like crazy but later dropped it cold. I suppose there is always something newer and more interesting on the technophiles' horizons. So will blogger last? Who knows. It's obviously not important enough to fix properly.

Used to be, when something new was developed (whether software, coffee pots, or anything between and beyond) it had a thorough testing stage. We don't seem to have that anymore; new stuff is just released to the public without knowing if it works or not. I suppose they make more money that way.

Well, heck! I hope this isn't happening on my blog. I have so few folks commenting that I need all the comments I can get! I hope Blogger isn't messing things up.

Leigh said...

Wendy, I just left a comment on your blog about the crock pot mac and cheese. It disappeared when I hit "publish." But did you get it in comments or moderation???

Wendy said...

Thank you so much for checking for me. Yes! Your comment showed up, and I posted it ;).

Leigh said...

Wendy, you're welcome! And thank you so much for coming back to let me know. I think I've re-commented on some folks' blogs 2 or 3 times because I wasn't sure what happened! I'll rest easier about it now. :)
