Progress on My Winter Project List

One of the items on my winter project list is sorting out the front bedroom, which has been used as a storage room for the past decade. Finally getting this far feels like a milestone, so I had to document it!

The loom has been moved out of its storage corner and all its pieces/parts gathered so that it's now accessible for assembly.

And we've got the big desk set up.

This means more boxes can be unpacked, which means things either get a proper home or are weeded out. That means my pile of storage boxes is getting smaller, and that puts me closer to having space to set up the loom.

We also took a look at what needed to be done to finish the room. The biggest thing is covering the insulation from when the old windows were replaced (front in 2016 and side in 2020).

Back then, Dan had a huge long list of things he wanted to do, but he finally agreed to just stick with the necessities. That suits me just fine.

Looking at your desk reminds me how times have changed. When I custom built my office desk that I'm typing this response at, I built four 2 drawer filing cabinets, two on each side. At the time, I never had enough filing drawer space and wanted to solve that problem once and for all. But then the world went largely digital and paperless. I actually only used two drawers for hanging files of paperwork, one for bills and such and one for genealogy research. The other six drawers just became storage drawers for anything that could fit in them. If I had it to do all over again, I would build storage under the work surface for all those things on top like my computer, scanner, printer, assorted other things, etc.

I've never used a loom before but I'm guessing it is quite relaxing. I can imagine letting my mind wander as my hands worked away.

Ed, Dan made that desk 20 years ago or more. It was a building project from a magazine. Obviously, he didn't make the filing cabinets, but that was part of why we thought the idea was clever. The shelf unit is separate from the desktop, and we've liked that it disassembles for moving and storage.

I had a problem, though, when I got ready to set it up in the front bedroom, because I had already used the old filing cabinets in my sewing room. I just figured I would replace them with new ones. Then I discovered that new filing cabinets aren't as tall! Those old ones are 29" but new 2-drawer cabinets are 24" Too short for a desk! I finally found two newish used ones of the correct height at a thrift store. But when I got them home, we discovered that they are lighter weight and less sturdy than the old ones. Dan thought they were too flimsy to hold the heavy oak desk top and shelf unit. So I ended up using the original filing cabinets for the desk and the recent purchases in my sewing room.

One negative about this design is that it's difficult to access the top drawers of the cabinets as they open right under the desktop. Mostly, I use the bottom drawers to store things unrelated to paperwork.

Nice! We are making progress on our list too. I hope to have an update in a few days or so.

Lookin' good! You must be excited about the prospect of having your loom assembled. Love that pigeon-holed desk.

Kristina, being able to post progress updates is always encouraging. Winter is an especially good time to make progress on projects!

Daisy, lol. Or maybe, weaving is looming closer. ;)

Rosalea, very excited! Also excited about being able to put this room to a more "normal" use. It's a relief to get those boxes unpacked and broken down for mulching the garden!

Doesn't it feel great to make progress? It is like Spring cleaning with complete freshness. You will be so proud when you get near the bottom of your list. Lots of space with your big desk. very nice..

Shug, I can tolerate clutter for awhile, but eventually everything needs a good and thorough cleaning! It feels so good to be finally making this much progress.

Not an effort for the weak of heart!

I am so excited about the "big" loom getting close to reveal status. My sweet friend in northern California has the same loom and they take up a considerable amount of real estate. But oh my the possibilities are limited only by the mind of the weaver!

Love the desk and the solutions. Talk about being close to the finish line! It is nice to have things to look forward to. But getting things in place and then realizing that maintenance is a real place and not a bad place to be!

That is great progress Leigh, and that desk is sure a dandy! Ha! It’s so great to see new life given to a room! We are doing a lot of updating to this old farm kitchen, and it has been a challenge, but so worth it! Great part is, when the weather is crappy outside, we have puttering jobs inside to keep us busy! Love your progress, and what’s looming will be a bonus!

Goatldi, I'm motivated! Getting the loom up is part of that (one loom simply isn't enough! LOL) but also I'm tired of the piles. It's slow going to get through the boxes of odds and ends, but it's a relief to get one more box out of the way.

Wyomingheart, oh yes, a kitchen is probably the biggest job to tackle in a house! Especially when trying to design one that is functional to a homesteading lifestyle. We took time with ours and that decision served us well.

Oh, I can't wait to see your loom all set up. You can store lots of stuff in that big desk. Your posts always make me want to clean out and re-do something. :) I was just looking at your purple sweet potato post. I just can't imagine them being purple. There is a farmer who comes in Food Lion to grocery shop. He most always stops and talks with Dan. Yesterday he promised to bring us some purple sweet potatoes. Glad I noticed your post.

Henny, thank you! You will enjoy the purple sweet potatoes. Blindfolded, you probably couldn't tell the difference, but the color is very fun!
