Halloumi is a traditional Mediterranean goat milk cheese. It requires a few extra steps compared to other cheeses (how-to here), but it tastes good and freezes well. It's one of our favorites, especially grilled or pan fried. I've experimented with various methods of frying it, and this is the way we like best.
Fried Halloumi Cheese
- slabs of halloumi cheese (instructions to make here)
- flour
- egg, beaten
- bread crumbs
- oil or fat of choice
Heat a cast iron pan with just a bit of oil or fat. Meanwhile, dredge each
piece of cheese in flour, dip in egg, then roll in bread crumbs to coat. Place
in hot fat and brown each side until golden and crispy. Serve
immediately.

Wow! That looks delicious! Sounds like something has been missing from my menus! Have a perfect weekend! On a side note, how are the kids doing?
Well, I really wanted to edit my comment but.... Anyway, that cheese sounds wonderful. I was curious about the peppermint after reading your post on making the cheese. I'm not a fan of mint in any form.
Wyomingheart, it's Dan's favorite. :)
The kids are doing great! I think I've finally narrowed it down to 2 keepers (always hard to do!)
The mint is transitional, but I only tried it the first time I made the cheese. I didn't think it was a compatible flavor. I think they could be rolled in any herb mixture, although now, I just leave it plain. I also don't fold it anymore. I just cut into slabs and leave the shape at that. So, I use the traditional method, but have adapted it for my own convenience.
It does sound really good, although I'm not a huge fan of fried anything. I wonder if it could be baked instead?
Make that, "the mint is traditional" I, too, wish blogger had an edit button for comments!
Nina, oh yes, it can be baked. We've had it grilled too. It seems to be an excellent cheese for that because it holds its shape.
Grilled? I need to know more! Do you prepare to the same? Doesn’t it melt with the heat?
I've never made Halloumi, but I need to one of these days. Fried cheese...I LOVE the stuff, looks yummy! :)
Wyomingheart, no it doesn't melt! It gets melty, but it pretty much holds it's shape. Dan does ours over his wood grill, so it gets a lovely smokey flavor. :)
Rain, good to hear from you! You definitely need to try halloumi!
Leigh, we had Halloumi for the first time about a month ago - in this case, after frying it they brought it to the table and set it aflame! Also very good. It is on my list to try to make sometime.
TB, wow, flaming halloumi! Not so sure I'll try that one, but I'd like to see it.
