5 Acres & A Dream The Sequel:
Lessons Learned in the Quest for
a Self-Sufficient Homestead
a Self-Sufficient Homestead
"The homesteading dream, is it still alive?
"In 2009, Leigh and Dan Tate bought a 1920s farm house on five neglected acres in the foothills of Southern Appalachia. They had a dream but very little money. All was going well until an unfortunate accident forced them to rethink everything they were about.
"5 Acres & A Dream The Sequel is the second book in Leigh Tate’s homesteading series. It follows 5 Acres & A Dream The Book, and takes a hard look at what happened to their dream. Has it changed? Are their goals and priorities still the same? Leigh updates their progress toward food, energy, and water self-sufficiency, sharing how their self-reliance goals have expanded and changed. She shares how they've learned to prioritize projects in spite of distractions and discouraging times, and how they deal with feeling overwhelmed. She discusses how their relationship with their land and animals has changed the way they see themselves and their homestead."
Excerpts from the Introduction:
"When I first published 5 Acres & A Dream The Book, I never dreamed it would do as well as it has. Nor that I would hear from so many people telling me how encouraging that book has been to them. When I look back through it, however, I am aware of how much our homestead has changed. Between that and the encouragement I receive to continue writing, I felt that it was time to share the next part of my husband Dan’s and my story."
"If you're looking to take back some sense of control over your life, then I hope this book is an encouragement to you. I hope it can help you develop a new normal of your own making, with a greater sense of purpose and inner freedom. You don't need large acreage or a lot of money to start a garden. Or to simplify your diet. Or your lifestyle. You just need to take a first step. We all start the journey at the same place—the beginning."
Author Bio:

Congratulations on the publication of the new book. Let's hope its a roaring success.
How good for you! Congrats and I hope it's a huge success
Congratulations!
You are such an inspiration to read, and we are very happy and excited for you both. Can’t tell you how much we are looking forward to adding the sequel to our library! Congratulations Leigh!
Congratulations! Hoping for great success for this sequel.
Kudos to you! I know it will do well.
What will you do with all your spare time now that it's finished? ;0D
Posted it on my Facebook page as that has a far greater reach than my blog. It is a winner!!!
Thank you everyone! I appreciate the good wishes.
Daisy, when I find that spare time I'll let you know, lol. Right now I need to get the word out so that all the time I spent on the book is justified. :)
RT, thank you so much! Sending a big cyber hug your way!
Congratulations!
How good you must feel to have reached this point of completion on your latest book. (Big, big sigh of relief, eh?) I just ordered it from Amazon to add to your others on our shelves. Very eager to get and read it! I know your writing is important to you, but darned if I can figure out how and when you find the time to do it. Congratulations, Leigh!
I know the feeling of "will I ever finish and publish this book" all too well. I think every author does. WRG on publishing with KSP. Will this be available through smashwords too? Cockeyed Jo
Thanks Ed!
Mama Pea, I mostly find time by getting up early! But really, it would have been out a lot earlier if there wasn't so much else to do. I appreciate your adding it to your home library!
Jo, so far I've only gotten this formatted for paperback. Maybe eventually, I'll get it out as an eBook. The biggest challenge is the photographs. Optimizing them for print means they are a lot of MB, so the file size is too large for e-publishing. All the photos need to be re-optimized for the internet. Even so, I think the final file size would exceed Smashwords MB limit.
Congratulations! I've followed you for years, and have found your journey so interesting. Your books are on my Christmas list.
Congratulations Leigh! A great accomplishment and such wonderful news.
So proud of you and your latest book. What a labor of love for you to share what is a way of life and a passion for you.
Spare time? When you find it may I suggest weaving? Start small with mug rugs and then on to bigger projects 😉
Congrats Leigh. I'll be ordering one.
Rosalea, may Santa Claus be good to you this year!
TB, thank you! It is a big accomplishment (for me) but I love the process and the prospect of putting something of value into the hands of folks who want to find their own homesteading path.
Goatldi, thanks! Weaving is a great idea! Or at least some spinning and knitting. Cooler weather is hopefully on the way and once the fall garden is planted, it will be wonderful to get back to other favorite activities.
Mike thank you! I hope you enjoy it!
Your book looks wonderful! Congratulations on a job well done!
Thanks, Mary! It was truly a labor of love. :)
Congratulations! My copy is on its way as we speak, though it might be later in the year before I actually get to read it. :D
Wow! good work!
Oh Kelly, I hope you enjoy it!
Debby, thanks!
Leigh, It's a shame that the file is too big. Bet it's all those pics.
I will work on eventually turning this into an eBook. You're right, is it the pics, which have to be created in high resolution for print, which means a lot of KBs and MBs. It's also flowability of text, which is fixed for print books. One of these days I'll work on it, even if I have to find someone besides Smashwords to publish it besides KDP.
Hi Leigh. I started reading the "Sequel" and in the 'acknowledgments' I noticed my name, thank you. I hope my contribution was worthy of it.
Mike, I'm happy you noticed! Yes, a number of my blog readers have been invaluable in their help, and I'm especially grateful for the support and encouragement you've always shown me. Thank you!
