Painting the Front Room

On our cold, windy, snowy, icy days, I've been painting the front room. Besides the window coverings, painting means this remodeling project is finally almost done. Once the walls are painted, I can finally start putting the room in order and using it again! I have a weaving project in mind and I'm looking forward to getting back to my loom.

The room certainly needed fresh paint. We could see the old layers of paint on the walls when Dan replaced the windows, and mine is it's third paint job in 100 years. And all of them have been green! I chose a green that coordinated with the window quilts and the throw rugs

The old paint was glossy, and I find glossy paints don't take new paint well. Or at least new paint will scratch off more easily over the years. I didn't want to use messy paint remover, nor do a dusty job of sanding, so I washed them down with hot water, dish soap, and Bon Ami. Bon Ami is a non-bleach scrubbing powder that works very well and is safer for graywater systems. I rinsed it off with vinegar water. The walls definitely needed a good cleaning and this took the sheen off the old paint too.

New color on the left, old color on the right, .

The only "oh well" I have is that when Dan installed the cubby units, he attached them to the wall and desk with angle brackets. So I couldn't move the desk to paint behind it. I did the best I could, but if the desk and shelves are ever removed, it will be obvious! But then, I figure whoever comes behind us will likely re-do the walls anyway. Really, the 100-year-old tongue and groove should be replaced with new walls, but that's beyond the scope of our time, energy, and finances at the moment. A future project out there in someday-ville. For now, fresh paint will have to do.

I'm happy with the way it's turning out. The old color was dingy and dull, but this new shade is fresh and cheerful. It improves the room tremendously.

I am amazed that a wall could have gone 100 years with only two coats of paint. I already have two coats of paint on many of the walls of our house in the 13 years we've lived here! My wife is still talking about repainting some of the rooms but I'm hoping to put that off for a few more years yet. A few more decades would be even better!

Love your new paint color. When we built our house, I had the kitchen painted Dancing Green by SW. My husband was horrified the first time he saw it! 😁 After 15 years, we still have not tired of the color. RHill, TX

How clever to use Bon Ami on the walls. It has been a staple in our home for generations. Cleans without scratching!
Love the new color. We are getting ready to do some painting at our place too. I love having color on the walls.
Looking forward to seeing you use your new, cozy space.

Ed, it is pretty amazing. But then, painting is a big job. I don't know if the current color had faded or just gotten grubby over the years, but it wasn't that appealing. When we first bought the house, they had painted the living, dining, and kitchen white, so it looked fresh. I'll be glad to have this room in a fresher color.

RT, another green lover! Yay! The new color is definitely an huge improvement.

RHill, it's funny, but every time I paint, I'm a bit dismayed that the color on the wall never seems to match my idea from the paint chip. Eventually it looks okay! Maybe it's just the change of a large area like walls.

Dicky Bird, me too!

Rosalea, it improves the room wonderfully. I'll be glad when it's all done.

Daisy, when I did image searches for ideas for this room, I was amazed that every image of dozens and dozens, was all in white. White and gray, maybe with black for an accent. I guess that's the popular thing nowadays, it's just not my thing. I'm with you on color on the walls.

The Bon Ami has worked really well, both for scrubbing off the grime and for removing the slickness from the walls. Certainly not as messy as the alternatives!

Looks so much brighter! Green is my favorite color! Any shade.

A new coat of paint makes anything better and can change the dynamics of a room. Especially important if you are going to spend long amounts of time there.

(I have to admit one of the downsides of apartment living is the monotone white walls.)

Deb, another green lover! I confess I prefer cool greens to warm ones, but this one works well. :)

TB, yes, paint makes a world of difference. Seems like white is the universal wall color these days. I'd be tempted to cover most of it with pictures and posters. :)

Good for you for washing the walls! It’s probably the hardest part of the job but good prep work makes all the difference. The light green color will complement the view of your green yard.

Anonymous, it is said that the most important part of any job is preparation, but oh, it's the most tedious! The walls were pretty grubby, although I'm not sure how because it wasn't a main room. It feels good to know they were well cleaned before the new paint.

Whether white walls look good seems to depend a lot on the light exposure of the room. I’ve painted a room white that is south-facing room with lots of light and it looked great, but the same paint in a low-light room with only one window looked terrible. I ended up re-painting the room grey. It seems counter-intuitive, but darker rooms tend to look better with darker (or at least not bright) colors. I guess the lesson is not to fight what I have.

Anonymous, good point about the light in the room. It's a good reminder for any wall color, really.

It's amazing how something simple like a fresh coat of paint can refresh a room. Getting everything finally pulled together and call it finished is a great feeling.
