Front Room (Almost Done): Window Coverings

The to-do list for finishing the front room is getting shorter and shorter. After the walls were painted and the window trims done, it was time for curtains. For this, I wanted to use two quilt-look bedspreads. I had them on the windows previously, but discovered that, being one piece, they are a bit inconvenient when it came to opening them for light. That was because standard curtain rods have a center support bracket, so I could only push the two edges of the quilt to the center. That just didn't work well for me.

Dan suggested "the kind that open with a pulley cord." I remembered my mother had those when I was a kid with pinch pleat draperies, but I couldn't remember what they were called. A quick search with that description and Brave browser AI told me these are traverse rods. (And that's noteworthy because it's the extent of my AI usage. I like Brave AI because it documents its information sources).

Traverse rods are quite updated compared to the ones my mother had. There's no longer a pull cord, rather the curtains are either opened by hand or with a "wand" (which looks like a mini blind wand). Of the wand models, one can choose left, right, or center draw. Hanging choices are ceiling mount or wall mount. Here's the link to the ones I bought for a close up view.

We went with the wall mount option to suit the size of the quilts.

I can easily push the quilt to either side to let in the light.

Now it's very easy to let in plenty of light for weaving.

My next step ought to be putting the furniture back in place, except we ran into an unexpected problem! More on that next time.

At my previous house, we had several transverse rods. They are quite handy when you have large openings to cover like sliding glass doors or large groups of windows.

Ed, they would be good for sliding doors! Definitely nice for certain setups.

It's looking great! We are slowly getting supplies to do some more repairs here. We still have more rooms to paint here, but I need to purge each before that. Not looking forward to where I store my canning supplies. I'm considering reducing my ball canning jars. Love your quilt.

It must feel so good to be closing in on completing this room. The amount of light looks amazing! So perfect for working on your craft.

Kristina, thanks! This room was once our storage room, and I've spent several years sorting and purging. We're finally at a point, though, where remodeling is about done so that I no longer have to shuffle things out of one room and into another. With the improved storage of the front room, almost everything will now have a place. Anything else leftover will be re-homed.

Daisy it feels very good! I'm at the point of being impatient and excited to get the details done and put everything in its place. Then I can get to work on reducing my stash with projects. :)

Leigh, we installed these in our apartment for the blackout curtains. They really are very convenient.

TB, I'm surprised I didn't think of them before. They are indeed very convenient.

I love those curtains. I'm a big fan of pinch pleated curtains and those traverse rods. We used them on our huge picture windows. I'm glad we put them up when we did, because I've not seen them anywhere around here in years. Pity because they are so easy and functional! Great use of those bedspreads. They really do look like nicely made quilts!

Nina thanks! I've not seen traverse rods for sale anywhere locally. I reckon that's why I didn't think of them. They work really well for the bedspreads!

It's all coming together, isn't it, Leigh? Good for you and Dan! And I love the picture with your loom and the curtain open :)

Quinn, it is coming together and I'm just thrilled with it. We've been working on our house for 17 years and I'll be glad to have it all done!

It looks great, and so well done! It’s nice that you have plans to use the room right away.

Anonymous, thank you! I can't wait to be able to use the room. :)
