Colors of October

Sue, at Life Looms Large, is wrapping up her year of Colors of The Month. I didn't join in until last December, so my year of color will consist of 11 months. Here's October. (Click images to biggify)

The month began with just a hint of autumn color.
And autumn blooming flowers and berries ....

Toward the end of the month, autumn color in our area has become brilliant. I took a walk through our woods to see what I could find to photograph. Unfortunately, our homestead autumn colors are dull more subtle, so I don't have any breathtaking panoramas to show you.

We evidently don't have anything growing on the place that produces those glorious autumn colors! Here's what I did find though....

Colors of September

I have to make a confession here.  These colors have not been typical for September this year. But at the tail end of August, we got rain. When September arrived, the ground was moist and the temps cooler. During the first week or so of September, we had fungi galore. I was amazed at the variety I found, and couldn't resist photographing them. I know absolutely nothing about mushrooms, so I won't attempt to label any of these. They are here strictly as my Colors of September.

I did research mushroom identification sites, and have this link list to offer:

American Mushrooms
MushroomExpert.com
The Fungal Jungal
Backyard Nature Mushroom Identification

I've not tried to ID any mushrooms with them, so let me know how they work for you. Or if you have another suggestion, I'll be glad to add it to the list.

It's time to show our Colors of July. Sue, over at Life Looms Large, hosts a monthly local color photography challenge, and I've been joining in. There is almost too much to choose from this month, but I think these photos give a fair sampling.....

Colors of April

Sue (Life Looms Large) has put out the challenge to show our April colors. April has been our "greening" month, and I have to say that the predominant colors seem to be spring green, pink, white, and purple.

We've had violets absolutely everywhere. I didn't notice them last year because they were buried in the overgrowth.

My azalea bloomed. Hopefully the ones I transplanted last fall will bloom next spring too. I had to prune off all the flower buds for a more successful tranplant.

Two little blossoms on my new almond tree! I won't get any almonds, but was delighted to see these. Two little blossoms on one of my peach trees were pink as well. Unfortunately, I appear not to have photographed them. :( They were a brighter pink, more like the azaleas than the almonds.

The spirea bloomed this year. I noticed the bushes when I cleared out last year, but I'm guessing it hadn't received enough sun to bloom. This year, here it is.

My rabbiteye blueberry bush was loaded with blossoms! These bloomed light pink, but have paled as they've opened. If they all become blueberries, we will be wealthy indeed.

Dogwood with one of our old oaks in the background.

And here's another discovery, periwinkle. It too, is all over the place, and it too was smothered with overgrowth last year. Then too, I suspect we mowed both it and the violets down last summer, in an attempt to clear out around the house. This year I'll be more selective in my mowing. I love these spring bloomers and want to keep them and nurture them. Lovely little gifts of nature.

That's it for me. For more Colors of April, click here.
