| The cheese cave is now gone. |
So what happened? It started to leak. After I'd had it about two weeks, I found a puddle of water seeping out from beneath it. I thought at first that perhaps it was because I was using the floor duct to vent it. So I pulled it away from the wall, mopped up the water, and kept and eye on it. But it still kept leaking. Clearly something was wrong.
I contacted customer support with the idea of replacing it, but they would only refund me for this one after it was returned. Then I was to buy another one. Except the special buy price was gone and a new one was higher, so I said I'd rather shop around.
I rearranged my solar powered chest fridge, which is working out just fine. I can keep it at the required cheese curing temperature, and it has the advantage of higher humidity—needed for curing cheese anyway. The beverage cooler maintained a low humidity.
UPS picked it up yesterday, and I'm back to trying to figure out my pantry arrangements. That corner currently looks like this . . .

Well, darn. At least you found it before it did damage.
Your experiment now has me thinking as well. A cheese cave (or facsimile thereof) might encourage me to try more hard cheeses.
TB, I quit hard cheeses when I had so many less than tasty cheeses due to curing temps. For anyone who enjoys making cheese, I think it's a worthwhile thing to have.
I've been disappointed more than once with modern appliances. That is partly why I try to buy the simplest with the oldest tech ones when it is time to replace one. You likely didn't have any choices with your "cheese cave".
Ed, that's excellent advice! I recently bought a new stove and it is entirely mechanical. Ditto for the washing machine I'm looking at. I think these little higher temp fridges are relatively new, though. It's a good idea in theory, but I had a bad experience so I'm a little hesitant to repeat the experiment.
Sorry to hear that. Built in obsolescence seems to be the name of the game these days, but seems that your cheese cave jumped the gun!
Ed is right!
Rosalea, two weeks is not a good usage record! I'm glad of it in the end, though, because my chest fridge is not on the grid.
Good thing it broke while it was still returnable! I always learn more from trying things that don’t work at first, anyway.
Anonymous, I feel very fortunate about being able to return it for a full refund. I agree that I learn more from things not working than from things that do. :)
As disappointing as that is, at least you got your money back. No doubt you have the ingenuity to figure out the best solution. And no cheese was harmed!
Daisy, it was still under warranty, so one of the options was for me to contact customer support for the company and see about getting it fixed. I've not had good experiences with this option, so I chose to send it back for a refund. I would have accepted an exchange, but perhaps this is for the best.
That is too bad and disappointing about your cheese storage. You have a great start to your pantry idea. I hope you can figure out what to do.
So sorry to hear about the issues with your cheese storage and your pantry. Your pantry looks to be a good size. I hope you can figure it all out
Y.E., well, I think it's for the best in the long run. Rearranging the solar fridge wasn't a bad idea and it gives me a good place to age the cheese. At least I hope so!
Eggs, I'm fortunate to have a large pantry! It was a "man cave" when we bought the house and has made a good storage space. Trying to organize it though has been a challenge!
I'm so sorry your experimental cheese cave didn't work out. I am happy however, that you caught that leak before it caused any major damage. I sometimes think it's hit or miss with some of these new appliances.
Nina, it was disappointing at first, but I got my money back and figured out a better solution. I agree about new appliances. Seems like technology logically ought to make things better for the consumer, not riskier.
