Moving Day for Little Chickens

At about five-weeks old, our little Buff Orpingtons are fully feathered and look like miniature chickens rather than chicks.

Plus, they were starting to perch on the rim of their box.

I didn't want them hopping out of their pen, where they could inadvertently get stepped on by goats. So it was time to move them to the coop portion of the converted chicken tractor

It's roomier than their box. For the first couple of days, all the openings were screened off so they could look out and get used to their new surroundings.

Then I removed the screen from the door to let them see what outside is like.

The ramp gives them access to the enclosed area under the coop. Soon we'll open the front and let them roam in their new chicken yard. I just want to make sure they know to go back to the coop at night.

I love the interested expressions on their faces as they study each new view! You're very methodical, no scary sudden changes for them.

Sigh... every time I read a post like this I want to go out and buy a bunch of chickens again.

They all look so cute. I know they are just young chickens but still ...

They are looking really good, Leigh :)

Daisy, I hope so. Once they identify the new coop as home and go in at night, I'll be happy.

Liz, they are curious about everything. Establishing a new routine with animals always takes patience!

Ed, maybe someday. :)

RT, their littleness is really cute, I think. It's amazing though, that they know how to do everything chickens do.

They appear so inquisitive as they look around their new digs. Must be fun to watch them.

Such great pictures. Thanks for brightening my day.

Rosalea, they are incredibly inquisitive. Not as much as turkeys, but they are definitely interested in everything going on.

TB, you're welcome. :)

Well done! They must of slept well that night. Lots of energy going into a new home .They look like they will be lovely as they mature. I love that breed for the broody effect. In fact I put 10 eggs under Chickie Boom Boom and she ended up with 6 chicks. I decided not to purchase this year as I love my flock as they have multiple traits I am happy to keep going every year. Saves $$ and ensures to carry on the traits I love in my flock. Tonight I watched as the two week old chicks took commands from Chickie Boom on how to scale the ramp to the enclosed coop area for a pop of extra security. It was great fun to watch the whole process and she very patiently listened as she peeped at her. In about 30 minute they were all tucked in and I was exhausted from watching. But all was well.
