I get quite a few requests to do product reviews, but I rarely do them. I think consumer reviews are a great tool, but usually the products have nothing to do with my lifestyle. However, when I was contacted about reviewing a Luxear Cooling Blanket, of course I said yes! Living without air conditioning means we are always looking for ways to stay cool in summer.

The blanket uses fiber technology developed by the Japanese. Called "Arc-Chill," it incorporates microscopic (nano) particles of jade into polyester thread to create passive thermal wicking. You can read the research paper about this technology here, the gist of it being that the amount of jade and thread twist create a range of cooling effects. According to the box, the Luxear blanket has a cooling effect (known as Q-max in the textile industry) that lowers body temperature by 3.6 - 9°F (2 - 5°C).
First impressions. The blanket is double layered with an arc-chill polyester top and arc-chill nylon bottom. It isn't at all bulky, but has just enough weight to it to feel comfortable. It's soft, smooth, silky, and cool to touch. I was very curious to try it.
Test result: IT WORKS! You can feel the cooling instantly, and unlike bamboo, this one continues its cooling magic all night long. To increase the cooling effect, a room fan can be used too.

This blanket would be perfect for anyone who gets uncomfortably hot at night. Or for those of us trying to eliminate or cut back on our use of air conditioning. Anyone suffering from night sweats or hot flashes would appreciate one of these! Passive cooling makes it great for the off-gridder, for camping, or for stuffy nights when the power is out. They would make great gifts.
I have never heard of such a thing. Had I heard of it before, I would have assumed it was a hoax so I'm glad I read it here on a blog I trust first.

Wow. That is some glowing review there, Leigh. I am excited. Also, it made me wonder -- do they make garments from this stuff? Or - could I make a cooling shirt or a hat from one of the blankets? ReplyDeleteKris, good to hear from you! I was curious about clothing as well (I was thinking about a hat), so I did a little poking around. Another company has started selling an arc-chill fabric t-shirt. That's here -> Cooling T-shirt. At least on Amazon. There are also comforters and pillow cases, so a lot of useful products.

ReplyDeleteMichelle, we find it works both ways. It has the greatest cooling effect without a top sheet, but it works with one as well.

Having lived with air conditioning since I was married in 1969 - my hats off to those of you who live without it. Living in a condo with windows that have only one exposure and located in suburbia where cement is at least 50% of the surface area, having air conditioning seems like a health necessity.. Heat is one thing that I can tolerate (mostly) but humidity is just one step too far in hot weather for me. To have a blanket that helps with body temps seems like a miracle in my mind. Glad to hear that this product produces what it says it does. I will pass this info along to my cousin who lives without air conditioning. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteRT, when we lived in an apartment, I don't think we could have done it without air conditioning. We were on the southwest corner of the building and it was incredibly hot. It didn't help that we had ceiling vents and that the AC was a heat pump. The apartment never cooled off very well. When we moved here, did use our AC that first summer. But the electric bill went through the roof! All of our energy upgrades to the house have really paid off. So, little things like this cooling blanket are the icing on the comfort cake. :)

I'm pretty confident the blankets will help. There have even been some cooler nights here, when the blanket was too cool!
Annie, power outages are an excellent reason to keep a couple of these handy!
ReplyDeleteDan caught the skunk in his live animal trap. Or at least he caught a skunk. We've had so many this year that we don't know which is which!
