Polly farrowed! And we missed it. Yesterday, she was out in the pasture all morning, but when I went to check on her after lunch, she was lying down in the pig shed. I called Dan, started running, and discovered six little piglets.
We did arrive in time to witness her eat the placenta.
She seems to be a very good mom.
And Waldo? He was only mildly interested.
Even so, we've moved him in with the bucks for the time being. When the piggies are a little bigger we'll see about reuniting the family.
Ah how cute!!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteWaldo was prolly wondering where he was going to get all the cigars from. Since ya know he ate the ones he had :)
ReplyDeleteLOL, and he would too.
DeleteIs there nothing cuter than baby animals? I'd just want to pick each one up and hug it, ha. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteWonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!! When I finally retire I am going to raise pigs and turkeys...just love the babies, too much. You learn all you can about them, Leigh and you can be my mentor...write a step-by-step book and I'll buy a zillion copies!! Very happy for you and all your new baby animals on the Homestead.
ReplyDeleteYea for Polly's bred-in instincts on mothering! She did what she was supposed to on her own schedule. That speaks well for the breed!
ReplyDeletethey are just so flipping cute. Do you know how many boys or girls?
ReplyDeleteWe haven't checked yet. Polly is still very friendly but I don't want to push my welcome. I'd better look soon though cuz we need to know!
DeletePrecious! Congrats to the new mom.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Polly! And Waldo! And you and Dan! What a smashing success for you both and all your hard work on the ol' homestead! It's all starting to pay off, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteMama Pea, we were beginning to worry that out pig kingdom was going to be a bust, Happily, it isn't!
DeleteHow cute!
ReplyDeleteWell done a trouble free delivery they all look a nice size as well :-)
ReplyDeleteReally? They look so teeny to me! I know they grow fast, however.
DeleteThat's the way it's supposed to be...no fuss...no mess!
ReplyDeleteFor which I'm very thankful!
DeleteCongrats, so jealous!
ReplyDeleteNah, you just need some of your own. :)
DeleteOMG, they are just too adorable!
ReplyDeleteHow great to hear from you! They are insanely cute, aren't they?
DeleteWhat beautiful animals.
ReplyDeleteHarry, I just love our pigs. :)
DeleteWow! Didn't even know that she was expecting. So glad that all went well and she is such a good momma. I guess from Babe & Charlotte's Web I have just assumed that pigs are born in the spring.
ReplyDeleteAre the grandkids coming to meet the new piggies?
We weren't sure she was expecting either! I'm not sure if pigs are seasonal breeders or not, but that's something I should know. Granddaughters are coming on Thursday. :)
DeleteGAH!!!! so adorable! I would love to pick your brain about the American Guinea hogs... maybe exchange some pig knowledge for some pig knowledge??? we plan on getting some pig in the fall, but I have a few questions
ReplyDeleteCongrats!
I mean pig knowledge for BEE knowledge, haha
DeleteI am always happy to share and trade information. :) This is our first experience with pigs, but I can certainly tell you that we have never once regretted going with the Guinea hogs. I would say track some down when you're ready for pigs because they are the perfect homestead breed!
DeleteThat is fabulous news. Such a nice litter, they look fat, sassy and uniform. Are you going to clip the tusks now or wait a bit?
ReplyDeleteAmerican Guinea Hogs don't grow tusks. :)
DeleteI thought all boars had some sort of tusk, even if they are not big. How good these don't. One less procedure to deal with.
DeleteAgreed. It's one of the many reasons this is the perfect homestead breed.
DeleteLeigh,
ReplyDeleteHow precious what a healthy looking litter!!! Congratulations to you and Dan. Polly knew exactly what to do. It's going to be interesting to see how Waldo handles all those babies when you introduce them together.
Hugs,
Sandy
They are so cute! Lucky you!
ReplyDeleteSqueeeeee...so cute! And they all look content, being homestead hogs.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! That's fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThat is fabulous, and they are adorable! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteOh, congratulations! And all healthy, that's wonderful. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteSounds like Polly is a keeper, so great when it all goes well, super cute. Waldo is still a favorite:)
ReplyDeleteLike :)
DeleteCongrats! They sure are cute!
