Polly's Piggly Wigglies

Polly farrowed! And we missed it. Yesterday, she was out in the pasture all morning, but when I went to check on her after lunch, she was lying down in the pig shed. I called Dan, started running, and discovered six little piglets.

We did arrive in time to witness her eat the placenta.

She seems to be a very good mom.

And Waldo? He was only mildly interested.

Even so, we've moved him in with the bucks for the time being. When the piggies are a little bigger we'll see about reuniting the family.

  1. Waldo was prolly wondering where he was going to get all the cigars from. Since ya know he ate the ones he had :)

  2. Is there nothing cuter than baby animals? I'd just want to pick each one up and hug it, ha. Congrats!

  3. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!! When I finally retire I am going to raise pigs and turkeys...just love the babies, too much. You learn all you can about them, Leigh and you can be my mentor...write a step-by-step book and I'll buy a zillion copies!! Very happy for you and all your new baby animals on the Homestead.

  4. Yea for Polly's bred-in instincts on mothering! She did what she was supposed to on her own schedule. That speaks well for the breed!

  11. Wow! Didn't even know that she was expecting. So glad that all went well and she is such a good momma. I guess from Babe & Charlotte's Web I have just assumed that pigs are born in the spring.
Are the grandkids coming to meet the new piggies?

    1. We weren't sure she was expecting either! I'm not sure if pigs are seasonal breeders or not, but that's something I should know. Granddaughters are coming on Thursday. :)

    2. I am always happy to share and trade information. :) This is our first experience with pigs, but I can certainly tell you that we have never once regretted going with the Guinea hogs. I would say track some down when you're ready for pigs because they are the perfect homestead breed!

  13. That is fabulous news. Such a nice litter, they look fat, sassy and uniform. Are you going to clip the tusks now or wait a bit?

    1. American Guinea Hogs don't grow tusks. :)

    2. I thought all boars had some sort of tusk, even if they are not big. How good these don't. One less procedure to deal with.

    3. Agreed. It's one of the many reasons this is the perfect homestead breed.

  14. Leigh,

How precious what a healthy looking litter!!! Congratulations to you and Dan. Polly knew exactly what to do. It's going to be interesting to see how Waldo handles all those babies when you introduce them together.

    Hugs,
    Sandy
