I'm with Cally...they're training you. Leave them up there until they figure it out...maybe put something like stinky goodness at the bottom of the tree.
Cats are very good at training their owners... I know what every meow and action means when my cat needs something and I'm sure it only took him a few days to get me to figure it out! I dare say one time you'll not be there to rescue them and they'll come down on their own.
Ya'll, the thing that concerns me about leaving them in the tree till they learn their lesson, is that we have a hawk that has started frequenting our property. In fact, I walked back to the henhouse one day, and saw him take off from the very tree Riley and Katy were stuck in. We think the chickens are too large for him, but our cats are about the size of rabbits yet. I definitely don't want to lose a kitty to a hawk's lunch!

well, you have to try it out a few times - before you get better:)) we haven't had to pick our cat off a tree again - and would you believe it, today he brought a shrew... the funny thing: he put it into his food bowl - and started meowing, because obviously he didn't want to eat it - he'd rather have another snack:)) nice present....
I do think a cat is plenty smart enough to come back DOWN a tree with no problem. But, uh-oh, I'd be worried about that hawk. Our daughter has lost several full-sized chickens lately to either a hawk or an owl (haven't spotted it yet) but nothing has gone into or sprung a trap on the ground so we don't think it could be a four-footed critter. She has two new little outside kitties that I'm hoping don't become his next meal.

Mama Pea, that's scary. We've been hoping our chickens are too big. Don't owls hunt at night? I am definitely concerned about a hawk getting on of our kittens. We're always on the lookout, but hawks pay no attention to the presence of humans when they hunt.
I'm all smiles at this one! Cats sure get themselves into trees and then want help! It doesn't happen so often after a few years of life under their whiskers.
Sara, I've been fussing at them every time they start to climb and finally, they aren't going up so high, which is a relief. Hopefully the lesson in learned (???)
Flower, that is so true about experience. The trick is to get the experience without losing any of those 9 lives!
Cat, that must be it! I know our former cat certainly used up all of his in his very adventurous life. Hopefully these two won't work their way through theirs for a very long time.
Leigh, I totally understand about the hawk. Tucker is too big for a hawk to pick up, but his sister is not (although her length and fluff makes her look bigger than she is). Our cats fear the huge barn owl that occasionally shows up here. And of course they despise the coyotes I wrote about on my little blog a few days ago.

Oh my!!!! That is too funny. I think that this is EXACTLY why cats have 9 lives. They are just too adventurous (and crazy) for just one!!!! :)
