By dinner time there was some discharge so I stepped up the pace of my checks. On my 900th trip out to the barn, Lini was starting to push. Soon the birth sac appeared but I didn't see anything in it at first. Finally saw one hoof and a nose. There are supposed to be two feet, so I was concerned one foot was back. When this happens I always try to find the other foot and pull it out. Lini was really tight however and I finally got leg and head out first with the rest following right behind. First baby was a buckling.
I was alarmed, however, because she was bleeding. First concerns are possible torn uterus or placenta, but in looking closer I was pretty sure it was a tear in the vagina. The flow didn't last long but soon started coming out as clots. Baby number two was also a buckling. Lastly a little doe. Only then did I start getting pictures!

It was amazing how quickly these three were up and on their feet. Dan and I made sure they were dried off, had a tummy full of colostrum, and could find a teat on their own. We also made sure Lini wasn't bleeding anymore, had her fill of warm molasses water, was up and moving about, and had feed and more hay. She is an excellent mama.
Now I'm just waiting on Violet.
Her due date is the last day of the month, so we have a bit of a breather for now.

Deletehummm in all her pictures, Lini looked as if she had an entire football team in there. ;) Congrats on the threesome though.
ReplyDeleteI think they were each actually a little larger than Jessie's twins, but they came earlier, which is probably just as well!
DeleteMr Shoes & I discussed having goats, because I think they're so cute to watch & there is a big market here for them, but we decided that we would have to do a whole nother kind of fencing than what we have been putting in for 10 years... so that ended that thought. At least for now.

Goats do need good fencing! And gates! Some goats are jumpers, which I'm told is somewhat hereditary. I only keep the ones with the best temperaments, so that helps on all counts.

ReplyDeleteYes, most people are looking for does, and after all, one buck is good for a number of does. I do have requests for bucks this year, however. And does too, of course. Hopefully I can help establish some new Kinder herds elsewhere.

ReplyDeleteIt's always a blessing to have safe deliveries! I've had a few hairy ones and lost a few kids, so I always pray for easy deliveries and healthy kids.

ReplyDelete3 bucks and 2 does so far. Last year we had 2 bucks and 4 does, so I can't complain. We'll see what Violet does! She does look pretty smug in that photo, doesn't she? Like she has a secret!

DeleteThe triplets are a treat, aren't they? Fairly common for Kinders, although I've had more twins than anything else. Just have to make sure everybody is getting enough to eat with more than two.
I feel happy for you Leigh, those little ones are precious. Are you keeping all of them? I'm sure it comes with experience, you seem so calm and cool talking about the birthing. I think I'd be terribly nervous the first time my goat had kids! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteI was terribly nervous my first time too. Mostly things go well, but unexpected things do happen and I have to say I've learned most of what I know the hard way. Fortunately it's mostly happy times when it comes to kidding!
DeleteI forgot to answer about keeping them. Most of them will be sold - in fact I have a waiting list so long I won't be able to fill it this year. I may keep one or two, depending on what I end up with. It helps to evaluate the goats when you see what kind of kids they produce.

ReplyDeleteEverything seems to be okay, and she is definitely her old self. It was just scary at the time until I figured it out. Not that I would have wanted it that way, but at least it wasn't something worse.
