Tis the season, but for what? Does anyone else feel like consumerism has totally destroyed the holidays? I sincerely hope you all able to focus on the real reasons for your family traditions and enjoy them for what they were meant to be. ReplyDeleteNo, I don't think consumerism has destroyed the holidays because it's my choice to focus on the CHRISTmas; I don't get caught up in the drama because, again, it's my choice. If I'm around folks who are caught up in it, I either ask, "Why?" or move on, usually both. Life is full of, mostly, little choices that make big differences. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas to you and yours.

DeleteI think what helps us is that we don't have a television. At least we don't get any channels on it, so we are spared the advertising. I guess I'm always amazed that folks who get caught up in the commercial hoopla actually feel like it's Christmas. That doesn't make sense to me. It's a birthday celebration and without that I don't understand how it can have any meaning.
DeleteYes, I think consumerism has hit frenzy point. When I was growing up, nobody EVER did any decorating or shopping for Christmas until at least the day after Thanksgiving. We celebrated THANKSgiving. Now Thanksgiving is reduced to a glutony fest. Even Halloween has been overshadowed by Christmas consumerism. I resent seeing Christmas decorations with the back to school displays and hearing Christmas music before the other special days have been given their spotlight. It's nuts! But... like TCF said above, we all have to make conscious CHOICES. With that said, I hope you and your family and all your readers have many blessings to count and share with your loved ones around a bountiful table today. Happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a little girl we didn't put up our tree or decorations until a couple of weeks before Christmas. Then the tree stayed up until after New Year's day. Now the stores push it so early that I think everyone is tired of it by the time the day actually rolls around, and the tree comes down the next day. Earlier this week i was doing shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, and found all the Thanksgiving items marked way down on the clearance aisle. And Thanksgiving hadn't even happened yet! Kathy, I agree with you so much. One thing I'm very thankful for is a slower paced life.

ReplyDeleteThe consumerism doesn't even touch me, to be honest...I don't watch (or own) a television, avoid any kind of shopping as much as possible, and no longer have any sort of family holiday events or expected gift exchanges.
I do keep a list throughout the year of things I feel are needed but that I can wait til the November/December sales to buy, but that's more of a sensible shopping plan than uncontrolled spending/acquisition. In fact, even though I decided back in the summer to replace my computer with something I can actually SEE, and even though I know THIS is the time to be shopping for the "special" computer prices, it is very hard to force myself to shop even online. It's hard to justify so much expense - even on sale - for something that won't feed my animals or replace the roof, you know?

Yes, it is a good time to get better prices on things. January clearance sales too. Like you, I have a hard time buying "big ticket" items (especially when I doubt they'll last all that long.) I hope your day was a good one Quinn!

DeleteYes consumerism is destroying holidays, but that's mostly because consumerism is destroying EVERYTHING. It's ubiquitous. Holidays are just one more opportunity to create and manipulate buying opportunities (particularly well-suited for it at that).
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, bravo for drawing attention to real hand-crafted artisans. We encourage people to spend less (or better yet, nothing at all) on holiday celebrations, but we add that if gift-giving is important to you, then choose gifts handmade by real people, rather than mass-produced by factories.
There's so much more heart in hand-crafted gifts. Fortunately my family is easy to please. :)
