We're thinking more along the lines of leaving the back but bricking in the back opening, and then finishing it out as an alcove. We're contemplating either using the brick to make side walls, or use cement board. Trying to decide on the hearth too. Brick or tile??? Sharon, I'd love to see what yours looks like.Leighhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02435811789823712254noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1694364001063554832.post-19258613174447962442009-07-22T16:06:47.516-04:002009-07-22T16:06:47.516-04:00Our woodstove is an alcove stove and we couldn'...Our woodstove is an alcove stove and we couldn't be happier. Instead of sitting out in the room and taking up valuable floor space, it's nicely tucked away. It's our source of heat during the winter and is very effective. Steve built the mantle out of the same brick as the box and left a gap behind the mantle bricks for hot air to come through and circulate through the room. What a great solution for you!Sharonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06432035940956042729noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1694364001063554832.post-88202743125776782582009-07-22T11:09:40.297-04:002009-07-22T11:09:40.297-04:00Oh Leigh that looks like a lot of work!!!Oh Leigh that looks like a lot of work!!!Juliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02775727376347737034noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1694364001063554832.post-36487332470085819572009-07-22T10:46:12.580-04:002009-07-22T10:46:12.580-04:00Very good job and I too am impressed. I remember my parents remodeling the house I grew up in and I think I was more interested in the construction inside the walls than I was on the finished room. It was the first time I had come across lath and plaster.

So, are you going to rebrick the fireplace breast?
