Closing Out the Year with a Few Garden Shots

I said I was on a blog break. But I was in the garden yesterday with my camera and couldn't help but share a few shots.

Cosmic Purple Carrots (they're orange on the inside).

My lone Red Detroit beet. The seed was old, however, so I didn't expect much.

Volunteer chickweed. A favorite for salads and chickens.

Tatsoi and chickweed

Multiplier onions, collards, and clover.

Mizuna

Shin Kuroda carrots, clover, and multiplier onions.

Puzzling radishes. I thought I planted Purple Plums.

Savoy cabbage.

Chop it all up and put it in a bowl with feta and olives  - salad!

The greens look delicious including the beet greens. I grow beets mainly for the greens. Yummy stir-fried with garlic, leeks, and a bit of soy sauce.

You are making my mouth water. I'm planning my garden now for spring. I'm trying the cosmic carrots this year myself. I can't wait! Thank you so much for sharing.

That looks wonderful! isn't it amazing what can be grown in the garden in winter? Beautiful salad. I mostly have gourds I'm curing and decorating to sell, loofahs being cleaned for sale, and herbs still. We're doing mulch these days.

That looks delicious! Why doesn't my mind work like that? I have a few collard plants in the garden but that's all. Your carrots are pretty too.

Michelle, :)

Jo, we love beet greens. With or without the beets! It's been several years since I've gotten a good beet harvest, however, because of deer. They love beet greens too.

MillersBend, the cosmic purple carrots have done very well for me. And so pretty! I've visited your blog but can't comment since I'm not on Google Plus. :(

M.K., I've been thinking that I should garden more in winter. Summer is just too hot! ;)

Rain, there's nothing nicer than a fresh, homegrown salad in winter!

Henny, thanks! I keep trying to expand my winter garden. Unless it gets really cold, all goes well.

I'm inspired to try a few more unusual things in the garden, especially those carrots and some mizuna! Merry Christmas.

Wyomingheart, always a treat!

Mrs. Shoes! So nice to hear from you! Are you still blogging?

ANna, thank you! Happy New Year to you too.

Phil, mizuna is one winter garden staples. :) The purple cosmic carrots were a first and did really well, so I will definitely plant them again. Fun to have such interesting colors in the harvest.

Beautiful Picture Leigh.

I am almost resigned to Winter and Spring gardening while we live here. Summer destroys almost everything.

How nice to still have veggies in the garden at this time of year, Leigh! I might be able to snip a few chives or scallions but that's about it...nothing until spring on this mountain top! Happy New Year!!

Thanks, TB. I have to agree with your gardening schedule. Summer is just too hot and dry to garden successfully.

Debbie, it is! It makes up for summer when the garden goes into survival mode from the heat. :)
