House Project Phase 1: Back Gable End

Dan lost no time getting started on his new house project. His first step was to put up new siding on the back gable end of the house.

First the old vinyl siding was taken off

Our siding comes in 4-foot by 8-foot sheets with a barn board texture. Trying to get them up the ladder and hold them in place for nailing was not exactly an easy proposition!

The nice thing about the barn board pattern is that the sheets can be cut lengthwise and put back together with a little filler to cover the seam. You can't even tell it's been cut once it's up there.

You can see our solar attic fan in the photo above. The panel is in the upper right. That fan has really helped keep our home cooler in the hot weather.

Dan would really like to re-do that little back door overhang and extend it out a little farther. I'm glad he decided to just finish the project at hand. It is so easy to get off on tangent projects that are relevant but can also wait until another time

There are still a few things to do to finish this off: squirt some goop under the flashing in the above photo, prime and paint the siding, buy or make a vent cover for the fan, and figure out what to with this...

I think he wants to get the new roof on first though. That will be next.

It's crazy isn't it? All these projects we homesteaders do, when folks are age are busy picking out new furniture for their retirement condos in the Carolinas! Oh well, we'll have the last laughs when we're all warm and cozy this winter eating our home canned goodies. The new paneling looks great by the way!

I have a spot on my porch roof similar to that and it's beginning to leak. I'm going to have to do something.

Thankfully, our roof and siding is good. We just need to power wash it (didn't get it done this year).

sometimes those weird little corners take more time to redo than the whole other job:) and it's good to know that you work with goop as well! there's a saying here that ireland used to rely on fertilizer bags and string. they added silicone to that a while ago I think - but the old saying is still valid:)

You guys are so like me
People keep asking what I'm going to do when it's all finished! I say it'll never be finished!

Donna, thanks! And I have to say that our lives are so much more interesting! :)

Gorges, yikes! Not good. That spot on ours hasn't been the source of our leak, but Dan wants to make sure it never leaks.

Kristina, that's very good indeed! Keeping a house in good repair is so very important.

Bettina, ha, ha. Here it's duct tape and bubble gum, although bailing twine is my go-to. :)

Kev, that is so true! And I wouldn't trade it for the world, would you?

I'm not sure what to do for a spot like that other than track down whomever created it and ask them what the heck they were thinking!

Ed, I can't tell you how many times we've said the same thing! We have a long list of questions for him! Of course, several decades from now someone else will probably be saying the same thing about us. LOL

Jo, exactly! Time to get 'er done.

Looks very good! I like that new siding so much better than what you had before. Very tidy work.

M.K., thanks! I'm loving the improvement too and hoping for some good days to get it painted. :)
