Online Solar Cooking Class! The Scoop

I know I promised a garden update next, but I just received the confirmation and details for the free online solar cooking class I asked you about awhile back. I am really excited about this, because solar cooking has become a wonderful free-energy resource for me.

Here are the details.

13 Ways to Utilize Sunlight
for Delicious Efficient Homesteading

The instructor for the class will be Paul Munsen of Sun Ovens International. Here are some of the things it covers:

  • How to use a solar oven for off-grid baking, boiling, steaming, and roasting complete meals.
  • Why food doesn't burn or dry out in a solar oven.
  • How to boil or pasteurize drinking water in emergencies.
  • How to hard cook eggs (even freshly laid eggs are easy to peel with this method).
  • How to dehydrate fruits, vegetables, even meat for jerky.
  • How to dehydrate herbs without losing nutrients and essential oils.
  • Naturally kill bug infestations in grains or dried foods (think dry-pack vacuum canning!)
  • And more.

Date: Thursday May 11, 2017 (Not convenient? See below V )
Time: 7:00 p.m. CDT (8 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. MDT / 5 p.m. PDT)
Duration: 60 minutes plus live Q&A
Cost: FREE! But advance registration is required.

Why is registration required? It has to do with bandwidth. Too much web traffic will slow down or even crash a site. Preregistration monitors the amount of bandwidth based on how many people sign up. That way it ensures that folks who really want the class will have a spot.

So here's the link to register for the class.

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/learn-13-ways-to-utilize-sunlight-for-delicious-efficient-homesteading-tickets-34243006755

After you sign up you will receive a confirmation email, plus a free copy of the eBook

Emerging From An Emergency
What you should do if…?

You will later receive a reminder and private link to the class.

If for any reason the date and time aren't convenient, sign up anyway. Why? Because for a short time a replay will be available via the same private link. You can come back and watch it (or re-watch it) at a time that's better for you.

Any questions? Did I leave anything out?

Thanks for the notice! There are some things I definitely want to learn, even if solar cooking isn't in my immediate future.

I've been on the fence about solar cooking- hope this will sway me! Thanks.

It's not difficult, but it does use different techniques that conventional cooking. I'm looking forward to learning some new things myself.

Besides a lower energy bill, I especially like keeping cooking heat out of the house!

Thanks so much Leigh, I just registered :)))

Kymber, the information is well worth it! After you sign up they will send you a reminder and private link to the class. If you miss the actual live class, the link will still work for awhile afterward, so that you can watch it as a rerun.

Not a good time for folks in other time zones! On the day of the class a reminder of the class will be sent with a link to it. That same link will enable you to watch it as a replay any time you like.

I know you'll like it! The Sun Oven folks do a lot of educational workshops and videos, and they are all very informative. That's what got me going with my solar cooking.

Hi Leigh, I have a Sun Oven and have made a few things in it (lots of zucchini bread). I'd love to have more recipes - have you found a good source? Have you published any yourself? I've hard-cooked eggs in it, but haven't tried an omelette / quiche. I'm looking forward to seeing the online class, although I might have to watch the rerun.

Rhonda, yes! Two good sources. One is the Sun Oven website, their "Daily Solar Cooking Recipe" page. Also from Dani (above), her "Free From The Sun" blog. I actually bought her eBook and learned a whole lot from it. I think this class will be a great help as well.

Thanks - I'll check the Sun Oven link. And I've started reading Dani's blog - very interesting!

You're welcome Sarah! Hope you enjoy it!

Leigh said...

Yes, Dani has a great blog. :)

well darn. I can't participate as that is in the middle of critter / human feeding times. Is there a way to get some info later?

Leigh said...

Absolutely! Sign up for the class, because the link will work for the replay too. Then you can watch at a time that's good for you.

Cool! Do you know if they have any more discounts coming up? Nancy

Just made my day , er, night! :-)

Leigh said...

Yes! They should offer one of their really good discounts at the end of the class. :)

Hi Leigh, I signed up for the class and received the email, but I'm unable to download the book (I get a message "Blocked Plug-in"). Do you know whether Eventbrite is the right "person" to contact about that? (I didn't get a response when I replied to the email.) Thanks.

Leigh said...

Rhonda, I'm going to suggest that you contact Paul at info@sunoven.com. I'm hosting the class but Paul is the organizer and will be able to help.

Rhonda from Baddeck said...

Thanks - I'll do that.
