Chicken Door for the Chicken Coop

Checked off from the chicken coop countdown checklist - entry door for the chickens.

Close-up of the knob and pin to hold the door open.

In hindsight we should have had the top of the Dutch door swing into the feed room instead of into the coop. For some reason I had it in my head to have it open away from me, into the coop. Dan accommodated my whim, and with genius, I might add!

I like the idea on opening the door like that with a pulley system, might steal that for our new chicken coop, if we have any chooks left when we move, a fox was spotted this morning standing on top of the chicken house, so I am now expecting the worse.

i like the first door. That would be easy even for us to go inside and see what is happening!
I have enjoyed all your post and i am a follower of your blog. I would like you to visit my blog and be a follower of it.

This project is coming on so well and Dan's work really is of a high standard. The Chickens are worth it ! Love your pulley system.

Dawn, oh no! How worrisome about that fox. We've only seen one here but it appeared to be just passing through. I don't have any idea what you can do about it.

Weekend-Windup, thank you! I'll be happy to return the favor.

Gill, thanks! When Dan got to this project he told me to be prepared to be wowed. I am!

Lynda, :)

I can only imagine his engineering brain cramp when he had to make the door jamb to go both ways! I have never had birds free enough to go out and in. Maybe the next go around. Can you operate the door from outside as well?

Barb, I regularly give Dan fits with my requests. I know what I want, but don't have enough construction knowledge to know whether or not it can be done! He has managed so many amazing things for me. He's very straightforward about my ideas however and sometimes we have to rework them to make them doable. I tell him he's my Superman and I mean it!

We can't operate the door from the outside though.

Leigh,

It's nice your husband (aka: Superman) is accommodating with the construction :-)

I just love this chicken coop!

Your coop is really coming along, can't wait for move in day.

I too frequently give my hubby fits with requests. The sad part is he'll tell me no but won't give me any reason for it...that's when I do it myself. I think sometimes he just doesn't get the concept but when I show him, he gets it...but of course it is already done then.

That's one nice coop! My son once rigged up a line from his bedroom window to the chicken house so that he could let them out in the morning without getting out of bed. He's now a power plant technician, so that early ingenuity was put to good use later in life :)

Nice. Mine flips down into a ramp so I frequently have to knock poop and mud off to get it closed properly. My excuse is I don't have a Dan to make things right!

spiffy door! I had a lovely little pulley operated door on my first reno design of our little barn, but the chooks came faster than the renovations, so it never materialized. Neither did my feed room, but it's amazing what we can live with and work around without any problems, even though it isn't perfect. I do love your little coop.

Sandy, thanks!

Renee, me too. I think what you're saying about concept is key. Dan and I have the same problem, which is why we resorted to drawing things out. We each picture something different in our heads but with a sketch, we can visualize the same thing.

Granny Sue, thank you so much! That is so funny about your son. Very clever! I'm sure he keeps his currant employers very happy.

Tpals, we thought about that kind, but decided on the one you see. I wouldn't have thought about the maintenance problems. That's the kind of thing you have to experience to evaluate a design.

Nina, thank you! I love that I can open their door without going outside or into the coop. Keeps them from trying to make a getaway through the people door, LOL

Hi Leigh! I love that little door! What a neat idea! I'm so glad you have photos of all this so I can show the hubs! One day we hope to build a coop/shed like this! Thanks for sharing! Blessings from Bama!

Since I don't have chickens it will be interesting following yours! Neat that your husband can build this for you. Nancy

Very cool! I'm planning a similar pop hole for mine. I learned today my "kids" are going to be showing up two weeks earlier than I thought, so I need to get cracking!
